Hi there!

Jo Malone Velvet Rose & Oud

Jo Malone Velvet Rose & Oud

When we went to Sri Lanka almost two years ago I deliberately forgot my perfume with the intention of getting a new fragrance at the airport. Weird maybe, but I always pick up a new scent whenever I go on holidays...

I find it really amazing how scents take a route to our brains and trigger memories... I wanted something that would always remind me of my first time there and my heart settled down on the Jo Malone Velvet Rose & Oud Cologne Intense.

Now let me confess something... I'm an Oud junkie. For realzzz. If you spray Oud on you chances are I will fall in love! I find it extremely attractive and dare I say... aphrodisiac? :-)

Here is the description of the fragrance on the Jo Malone website:

"Darkest Damask rose. Rich and textural, wrapped with smoky oud wood. Spiked with clove, decadent with praline. Magnetic."

No offence here but I usually associate rose perfumes with more mature women. While I appreciate the scent of a blooming rose in a garden, it's not something I want to wear on myself. To me it smells a bit granny-ish. Sorry Grandma! ;-)

Obviously this is very different, otherwise I wouldn't be raving about it.

Rose and Oud are common notes but this particular combination is absolutely beautiful. The scent is intoxicating and very different from anything I've smelled before. Intoxicating, yes, but not in an overpowering way. The sillage is soft, captivating but never too bold.

When I first spray it I get quite a sharp rose note but it softens quickly and becomes very gentle. The oud notes darken the rose a little bit without making it too dark. Then, the praline kicks in and balances the wood-iness (is that even a word?) of the oud in the most subtle way. I can't really detect the clove but there is definitely a spiciness that I absolutely love. To me this is a very comforting scent and a real head turner.

This is advertised as a unisex fragrance but I don't see it as a masculine scent by any means. It makes me feel very feminine every time I wear it. This has become one of my all time favorite scents as it goes perfectly with my body chemistry.

The bottle is very elegant and understated. I like that a lot. To me simple things look the best.

Whenever I get a whiff of it the smell transports me back to Sri Lanka, sipping on fresh coconuts and watching sunsets with my little boy and my husband. That's probably why I love it so much...

I hope this review was helpful, I've always found it really hard to describe scents so next time you are close to a Jo Malone counter go have a sniff!

Now tell me, do you also forget your perfume on purpose before jetting off? :-)
